Hen Chronicles: Trapped by the winter weather

We’re always being told to be careful what we wish for, because it might come true. The old saying suggests that our strongest desires, however attractive they may seem initially, can carry hidden pitfalls.

Apparently the same applies to chickens.

When I went out to feed our three hens at noon the other day, sub-freezing temperatures and a stiff wind made for an unpleasant combination. So it was no real surprise that the girls had left their wire pen and gone back into their coop. They normally stay out of the coop during the daytime except to lay their eggs, but they probably made an exception this time to get out of the wind.

Trouble is, their quest for shelter carried unintended consequences. Nala, Stella and Snow managed to get away from the wind, all right, only to find themselves stuck in the coop for God knows how long after the wind blew the door shut behind them.

As it happens, the girls were none the worse for wear when I opened the coop door, but they sure seemed glad to get back out into the open air. The wind, notwithstanding.
