The temperature has hovered in the single digits plenty of times this winter here in central Maine. And although we're warming up ever so slowly, even a zero reading is not uncommon first thing on a March morning.
When it's that cold at dawn, chocolate lab Aquinnah and pit-bull mix Martha do their business with impressive efficiency, and then quickly trot back to the house without taking any of their usual sniffing-for-disgusting-stuff detours. In the weather department, they're wimps at heart.
The chickens, on the other hand, eagerly run out of the coop and into the cold pen to eat their breakfast alfresco. Snow, Nellie and Hope have weathered temps 10 to 15 degrees below zero this winter, so now they seem to welcome anything warmer, even if it's in the zero range. After breakfast, they remain outdoors in the frigid cold for some time before retreating into the coop to lay their eggs. Maybe all that clucking translates as: "Finally, a heat wave!”
It's all relative.
