Hen Chronicles: “I don’t wanna” is the refrain du jour

The first significant snowfall of the season is falling hard and fast here in central Maine. I didn’t wanna trudge through the yard to the coop at dawn, brush snow from the roof and the nest-box lid, remove the bagged leaves that I had placed outside the coop late yesterday to provide insulation overnight, and then defrost frozen latches before I finally opened the coop door.

Nellie came right out into the pen for breakfast, but the normally voracious Snow didn’t wanna. She stuck her head out the door and immediately pulled it back, like a turtle withdrawing into its shell. Eventually, she relented.

Hope, always the last of the three hens to get up in the morning, really didn’t wanna leave the roost. And once she did, she didn’t wanna head outside, even though the pen is temporarily covered by a tarp. I would have left her to her own devices, except that I needed to do something I didn’t wanna: clean the coop to remove the night’s “deposits.”

All of us (except the cooperative Nellie) were feeling rebellious this morning. We didn’t wanna. But we did.
