Hen Chronicles: Coincidence, or a sign of gratitude?

Maybe our return had nothing to do with what happened Saturday, but I'd like to believe otherwise.

Liz and I were out of state for a good part of last week, and while we were away Liz's friend's son took care of our three hens. Snow, Nellie and Hope continued to lay during our absence, but they ate less than usual and they only produced one or two eggs per day.

On Saturday, with the two of us finally back on the scene, "the girls" laid three eggs.

The same thing might have happened, and under the same schedule, if our chicken sitter had remained on the job longer. But it's pleasant to contemplate the possibility that the hens were so glad to see a return to normalcy that they kicked things up a notch in the laying department, as their way of saying "welcome home."
