Hen Chronicles: Do chickens believe humans are omnipotent?

We had heavy rain and high winds here in central Maine last Thursday. The weather was so bad that I completely covered the pen with tarps, so the ground would not get soaked and “the girls” could still venture outside (of a fashion).

By the time I got out to the coop first thing Friday morning, the storm had passed. Before I removed the tarps, though, I unlatched the coop door. Eager for their breakfast, Snow, Nellie and Hope emerged into the darkness of the pen, which the sun could not penetrate because of the tarps.

As the hens chowed down, I got to work. First, the south-side tarp came off. A wan bit of daylight seeped into the pen. Then I removed the west-side tarp. The pen grew somewhat brighter. Once the east-side tarp was gone, still more light flooded the enclosure. Finally, I yanked the last tarp off the top of the pen, fully exposing it to the new day.

I wonder if the hens, while watching this gradual introduction of light to their world, asked themselves: “Are these humans so all-powerful that they control the very sun?”
